Most of my framed flies of are classic New England Streamers, particularly the Rangely style, especially those created by Carrie Stevens. I live just a short distance (well, 5 hours) from Upper Dam, Maine, which is the epicenter of the New England streamer. Many of Ms. Stevens' patterns were named after people or places in the area, and I've been able to frame up some of my photos with the relevant fly.

The dam in the first frame below is Upper Dam, where Ms. Stevens first cast the Gray Ghost streamer and caught the fish that launched her career as a fly dresser.

You can still fish there, although you need to hike in a ways. Although I have caught a few salmon in the pool, I still haven't caught a brook trout on a Gray Ghost. But I keep trying.

This is the dam building and the pool at Upper Dam, Maine. Upper Dam separates Upper Richardson and Mooselucmaguntic Lakes. The Gray Ghost was first fished in this pool, catching a 6 lb. 13 ounce brook trout. Ms. Stevens entered the fish in the Field and Stream Magazine fishing contest, won second place, and from then on had more business than she could handle.

Lakewood Camps sits just north of the mouth of the famous Rapid River. It is still an active camp, now owned by Whit and Maureen Carter. The Lakewood fly in this frame was named after the camp itself, but other patterns were named after the owner at the time (Larry Parsons) and several of the patrons.

I've taken pictures in quite a few places, but there is something magical about the light up around the Rangely region. This is a photo of Middle Dam, just south of Lakewood camps, and the headwaters of the Rapid River. I paired this photo with a fly named the Rapid River.

Of course, the light is always great if you can get up in the morning! This is looking east over Lower Richardson lake. I like to think that Carrie Stevens might have seen this same sunrise while visiting the Parsons at Lakewood Camps, and was inspired to tie her Morning Glory pattern.

I assemble high-quality wooden frames for these mounts, use UV-proof glass, dust covers, and cut the mats myself.
